You'll hardly believe you're a stone's throw away from bustling San Jose. Not only is this ride's scenery more reminiscent of the Central California Coast, with its rugged mountains and chaparral landscape, but also this area and these roads are surprisingly unpopulated, even on weekends. The view from the top of Mount Hamilton is spectacular.

You'll go from the straight and narrow to the steep and challenging on this loop. After a nice jaunt through golden hills and ranch country, you'll pass Mount Diablo, the tallest peak in the Bay Area. The loop will take you around the north peak and into Mount Diablo State Park. On a clear day, head to the observatory deck, where you can pick out Yosemite's Half Dome among the snow-capped peaks of the Sierras to the east.
