A Few Things Everyone Should Know About H-D Batteries

Posted by Ryan Beeman on Mar 19, 2017 11:00:00 AM

Genuine H-D Batteries offer the latest technology for higher cold cranking amps, long life and improved rechargeability. Featuring the latest AGM technology, these batteries are durable, long-lasting and trouble-free. And what is more, they are made in the U.S.A. Here are a few basic facts about motorcycle batteries:

  • A battery discharges continuously in small internal loads called “self-discharge” Self-discharge speeds up drastically as the temperature rises.
  • A battery discharged too deeply, for too long, may be permanently damaged.
  • A battery charged with an incompatible charger may be permanently damaged.
  • Use a battery tender to prolong battery life.
  • To a battery, a big load for a short time is the same as a tiny load for a long time.
    • The bigger the battery, the more charge it can store.
  • When a motorcycle is parked, the load on the battery is small but never zero.
    • Given enough time, parking will discharge any battery.
  • Motorcycles with added accessories, such as alarm systems, have even larger loads discharging their batteries when parked.

Don't Overlook Regular Brake Service

Posted by Ryan Beeman on Mar 17, 2017 2:00:00 PM
No matter your riding style, you still need to have your brake fluid changed every 2 years.

Many H-D motorcycles use DOT 4 brake fluid.  As the fluid ages, its chemical properties deteriorate and it absorbs water.  This changes the physical properties of the DOT 4 brake fluid, which can lead to brake performance issues including soft or spongy brakes.  Left unchanged long enough, the brake fluid could eventually deteriorate so much that there could be a loss of either front or rear braking.

Motorcycle Oil: Why not just use the same oil I put in my car?”

Posted by Ryan Beeman on Mar 11, 2017 8:00:00 AM

What's the difference? It's just oil right? It's not like I'm putting Olive Oil in my motorcycle. I should be able to just drop by the auto parts store, pick up a couple of quarts and top 'er off right? I don't need fancy motorcycle oil.

You might  be doing more harm than good. Harley-Davidson V-Twin engines operate at higher temperatures than water-cooled automobile engines, which means they require extra protection. They are specifically designed to run a certain type of oil with certain features. That is why Harley-Davidson has spent so much time and money investing their own synthetic lubricant that is specifically designed for use in your Harley-Davidson motorcycle.  Here are a couple little known facts about H-D oil:
