You'll hardly believe you're a stone's throw away from bustling San Jose. Not only is this ride's scenery more reminiscent of the Central California Coast, with its rugged mountains and chaparral landscape, but also this area and these roads are surprisingly unpopulated, even on weekends. The view from the top of Mount Hamilton is spectacular.

Warnings: Fill up on food and fuel before heading out-there is no gas between Alum Rock Park and Livermore. Calavaras Road is one lane for about seven miles and the curves are not marked. When ascending Mount Hamilton, watch out for inexperienced downhill motorists who stray from their lane. There is also some gravel on the side of the mountain.
Suggested Stops: Since Spanish missionaries planted the first grapes here in the 1760s, the Livermore Valley has been producing some of the best wines around. Cruise down scenic Tesla Road and compare the vintages of over ten different wineries.
In 1884, widowed heiress Sarah Winchester, in an attempt to appease the vengeful spirits of those killed by Winchester Rifles, commissioned the construction of what would become known as the Winchester Mystery House. Work continued 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until Winchester's death 38 years later. The house features architectural quirks: staircases lead to ceilings, doors open to nowhere; and so much more.
